What Are Federal and State Restrictions On Paintball Guns?

I am an amateur inventor and engineer, and I’m designing a paintball gun assembly. I was wondering what the restrictions would be on my design (psi limits, aesthetic limits, etc), as well as marketability.

Anything over 500 feet per second is considered a firearm. As most markers max out (engineering wise) at about 360 fps, you should be fine. Paintball guns are not required to have an orange tip on their barrel (thank God) even though a good number of the markers out there today look like the real thing.

You will need to look at mechanism patents. Many of the marker manufacturers have multiple patents either confirmed or pending on the operation of their markers. Autococker’s bolt forward system and Smart Parts, shuttle valve being just two of many. Of course, much of these patents can be licensed for use.

I personally think that Smart Part’s spool valve is engineering genius, when it comes to mass, speed and cycling time. A lot of people dis the Ion internals but I’ve rocked more than a few games with my little stock marker.

As far as PSI restrictions, your limited by ASME ratings on the pressure vessels. A standard 48cui Steel tank is rated for 3000psi, that pressure is stepped down to around 100 psi in most markers. Of course this varies from marker to marker. As far as CO2 goes, you’ve got to allow for expansion of gas within the marker and have a fail safety point in regards to the O-Rings. Tippmann products might be used mostly with HPA these days but their markers are still made to take CO2, even in liquid form. Something that will kill damn near every electro.

Here in Canada, were restricted by CSA standards, which are a crock for the most part. If you’re in the US of course you’ll be dealing with UL certification. One work around is to use pre certified components in a body of your manufacture. This will allow you to jump a lot of the expensive testing for certification process if you ever want to go into production.

Yep, Spyders are indeed good guns at a cheap price.

E-spyders (electronic spyders) are great for both.

Mechanical spyders aren’t too great for speedball because they don’t shoot as fast (although a good player could use any gun effectively).

MR series spyders are designed specifically for woodsball.

I am starting to get into paintball and need to know some good guns to go for. any tips on equipment will be appreciated!

The Tippmann or BT Line are really good lines of paintball guns for Woodsball. Tippmann A-5 or the 98 Custom would be a good fit. Also buy many upgrades with these paintball guns. Speedball for a beginner you may look into the Spyder Electra or the Smart parts Ion XE Paintball Guns. Just what i would recommend to you.

and yes, you do need a license to own paintball guns. You will have to get them from the police, and pass a firearms course. I heard they are not cheap either.

It’s much easier going to already-set-up paintballing places. They are not too expensive… at least for me in the NT…

I can’t remember what crime show it was, I think they did some other crimes, but they showed where they had videotaped themselves driving around in a car shooting people with paintball guns, and the people thought they were really shot + stuff. Anyone remember who they were? Ty!

I am looking for some good paintball guns. Not too cheap and not too expensive. I’ve heard good and bad ratings on spyder so I don’t Know what to get.

Spyders are good guns. Any bad things you hear are due to user-error – typically, newer players are the ones that get spyders, and it’s newer players that don’t yet know how to maintain a paintball gun. Nothing wrong with that, except for those that don’t bother to LEARN how to maintain the guns, then these same players start bashing products. Pretty sad.

Anyway, spyders & tippmanns are both good brands. Partly depends on your budget and partly on your preferred style. Woodsball, i’d recommend Tippmann. Speedball, i’d recommend Spyder.

However, other companies have started moving into these beginner gun price ranges, offering better (imo) options than spyders & tippmanns. Smart Parts has the Vibe & Proto has the SLG, although the SLG requires hpa/compressed air (not too big of a deal, as hpa tanks keep getting cheaper & cheaper, you just need to have access to refills).
